Joby Aviation S4 eVTOL Enters DFW Class B Airspace in First Texas eIPP Campaign, Generating Data for US Commercial Air Taxi Rules

Joby Aviation's S4 electric air taxi flew into Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport this week under FAA oversight, the first time an eVTOL aircraft has operated in DFW's Class B controlled airspace. The Texas campaign, based at Perot Field Fort Worth Alliance Airport in Haslet, launched on September 10 and runs through September 14, marking Joby's first operations under the FAA's eVTOL Integration Pilot Program.
The program, established under Executive Order 14307 and announced by the FAA on March 9, 2026, selected eight projects from more than 30 applications spanning 26 states. The Texas effort is led by the Texas Department of Transportation under its Project Nexus bid, with Joby joined by Archer Aviation, Beta Technologies, and Wisk Aero. Under Other Transaction Authority agreements, Joby can fly production-intent aircraft in live, complex airspace ahead of full FAA type certification, though no fares are charged and no passengers are carried for hire.
This week's flights include a joint kickoff demonstration at Alliance Airport, a flight into DFW's corporate FBO, a round-trip over Arlington and the Fort Worth Stockyards, and a route connecting Alliance Airport to Toyota Motor North America's Plano campus. The S4 is a five-seat aircraft with six tilting propellers, a top speed of 200 mph, and a target range of up to 150 miles per charge. Texas is the second eIPP theater to activate, after a July flight by Beta Technologies and United Therapeutics carrying organ products across a four-airport corridor in Virginia and Maryland.
Joby is simultaneously in Stage 5 of the FAA's five-stage type certification process, with five aircraft flying and 12 more in production, and has targeted commercial launch by end of 2026. Q2 2026 results raised full-year revenue guidance to $115–125 million, largely from its Blade charter subsidiary. Independent analysts have voiced caution, with a February 2026 analysis citing SMG Consulting data placing Joby's earliest realistic type certificate at mid-2027 with only a 20–30% probability. Toyota has committed $894 million to Joby, and the companies formed a joint venture in June 2026 toward eVTOL manufacturing, with a long-term vision of regional air taxi networks linking Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio, and Houston.
