2026 Aviation Accident Data: Over 600 U.S. Accidents by September, 143 Major Occurrences Worldwide

Why It MattersThe data places most accident exposure in personal and general aviation rather than airline or business-jet operations, which bears on how safety and risk comparisons across segments are framed.

Preliminary data from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), international databases and industry reports through approximately October 2026 shows that more than 600 aviation accidents had been recorded in the U.S. by September 2026. The vast majority involved small, single-engine general aviation aircraft rather than commercial airlines or business jets. One aggregated NTSB dataset lists roughly 1,246 U.S. accident or incident reports for 2026 to date, including about 225 fatal accidents and about 508 fatalities.

2026 Aviation Accident Data: Over 600 U.S. Accidents by September, 143 Major Occurrences Worldwide

Worldwide databases show over 143 major aviation occurrences and 254 fatalities in 2026 so far. Events cited include a Colombian military plane crash that killed 69, the SATENA Flight 8849 Beechcraft 1900D crash in Colombia in January that killed 15, and the Jazz Aviation CRJ-900 collision at LaGuardia in March that killed two pilots.

For comparison, the U.S. recorded approximately 1,417 plane crashes in 2024, 258 of them fatal. As of April 2025, there had been 153 crashes in the U.S., 13 of them fatal. In 2025 globally, there were 101 commercial airliner accidents, 12 of them fatal, with approximately 420 passenger and crew deaths. Roughly 80% of aircraft accidents involve personal planes, and the number of fatal commercial airline crashes worldwide in 2026 so far appears to fall in the range of five to ten, depending on classification.
