Private Jet Market in Indonesia Shows Resilience During Protests

Indonesia’s late-August protests (25–31 August 2025) reshaped business aviation traffic rather than weakening it. Instead of a general decline, the data shows a structural redistribution of demand across airports. The clearest example came from Jakarta, where Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (WIII) surged by +50.6% in private jet movements, rising from a daily average of 6.17 to 9.29 flights. Meanwhile, Halim Perdanakusuma (WIHH), which caters more to domestic travelers, softened by −12.1%, dipping from 13.33 to 11.71 daily movements. Taken together, the Jakarta metro still posted a healthy +7.7% gain, proving that demand was simply redirected to the international hub offering broader connectivity and greater certainty.
Beyond Jakarta, the redistribution trend became even clearer. Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport (WADD) collapsed −71.8%, reflecting a sharp pullback in leisure-focused travel, while Surabaya’s Juanda Airport (WARR) declined −31.4%, another indication that secondary domestic nodes were less favored during the political uncertainty. The only exception was Sumenep (WART), which posted a modest +23.8% gain, though the increase came from a very small base and does not suggest a larger trend. Across Indonesia’s Top-5 airports, year-on-year growth slowed from +77.3% in early August (1–24) to +54.0% during the protest week, but the headline moderation masks the redistribution of traffic toward international egress points like WIII.
Looking at the bigger picture, the business aviation market remains remarkably resilient. Nationally, August 2025 activity rose +44.3% compared to August 2024, and in protest-affected metros — including Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, Makassar, and Yogyakarta — the growth was even stronger at +66.7% YoY. The key takeaway is that the protests did not reduce structural demand for private aviation; instead, travelers adjusted by shifting their itineraries to airports that offered international lift, operational flexibility, and reliable access.
For operators, the lesson is clear: success depends on agility and foresight. Maintaining slot access and handling at WIII is essential to capture demand for international connectivity, while keeping flexible fleets and standby crews at Halim and other secondary hubs will allow operators to benefit when domestic activity rebounds. Leisure-heavy markets like Bali will require itinerary reconfiguration, rerouting trips through Jakarta to maintain seamless travel. Just as important is client communication by proactively advising travelers on airport options, alternates, ground access, and turnaround times, operators can stabilize expectations and preserve service quality.
At Avi-Go, we position ourselves at the forefront of this shifting landscape by delivering real-time, data-driven insights that help operators, brokers, and service providers anticipate market changes with precision. Our AI-powered platform enables industry players to track redistribution trends, optimize charter planning, and safeguard connectivity even during periods of uncertainty. In short, the late-August protests rerouted, but did not reduce, private aviation flows in Indonesia. With Jakarta’s WIII emerging as the clear beneficiary, the business aviation market continues to demonstrate both resilience and adaptability. For industry players, prioritizing international optionality while safeguarding domestic continuity will be the key to navigating future uncertainties.
