Cessna Citation CJ3 Gen3 Completes First Flight, All Three Gen3 Light Jets Now in Flight Testing

Textron Aviation announced on July 29, 2026, that the Cessna Citation CJ3 Gen3 prototype completed its first flight, putting all three next-generation Citation light jets — the CJ4 Gen3, CJ3 Gen3, and M2 Gen3 — into active flight testing. The flight departed from Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport, lasted nearly two hours, and reached a maximum altitude of 41,000 feet and a maximum indicated airspeed of 278 knots, with pilots Steve Helmer and Dave Wellbrock focused on testing cockpit software functionality.
Flight test pilot Steve Helmer said the aircraft demonstrated the expected handling qualities and system performance from takeoff to landing, validating months of preparation ahead of expanded testing. Chris Hearne, senior vice president of Engineering & Programs, said comprehensive flight testing will now proceed as Textron Aviation works toward FAA certification and entry into service.
The Citation CJ3 Gen3 is built around the Garmin G3000 avionics platform and adds Garmin Emergency Autoland, developed in response to customer feedback. It features a maximum range of 2,040 nautical miles, a maximum payload of 2,135 pounds, standard seating for up to 10 occupants, and a baggage capacity of 1,000 pounds, with cabin amenities including swivel seating, RGB accent lighting, modern connectivity, and a naturally lit lavatory.
