Electra's MIT-Born Hybrid Aircraft Project Secures $850 Million Ohio Manufacturing Investment

A hybrid aircraft concept that began as a graduate student project at MIT is now the basis for an $850 million manufacturing investment in Springfield and Clark County, Ohio, announced by the company behind it, Electra. The investment is expected to create 1,975 jobs, and construction on Electra's 96-acre Ohio manufacturing facility will begin next year.
Electra's nine-passenger aircraft is an ultra-short takeoff and landing design that uses a gas-powered generator in the nose and two battery packs to drive eight electric motors mounted on the wing, producing a blown-lift effect that allows takeoff and landing in a distance roughly the length of a soccer field. The aircraft has a range of approximately 1,200 miles and a cruising speed of around 200 miles per hour.
The project traces back to a 2017 MIT class project in which graduate student Chris Courtin, now Electra's Director of Technology Development, compared short takeoff and landing designs against eVTOL alternatives before continuing the work as his doctoral thesis. Electra was formally founded in 2019 by John Langford, previously of Aurora Flight Sciences, with MIT professors Mark Drela and John Hansman serving as founding technical advisors. Electra's two-seat EL2 demonstrator first flew in 2023 and has since logged more than 200 flights, ahead of the full-scale nine-passenger production aircraft. The Ohio facility's initial production phase will be capable of building 400 aircraft per year, with a subsequent phase targeting approximately 800 aircraft per year, and Electra is also exploring military logistics, cargo transport and humanitarian applications.
