Heart Aerospace's X1 Completes Maiden Flight: 30-Seat Battery-Powered Jet Burns Just $5 of Electricity in 27 Minutes

Heart Aerospace's X1, a 30-seat fully battery-powered aircraft, completed its maiden flight from a regional airport in upstate New York, flying for 27 minutes on battery power alone and reaching an altitude of 1,100 feet with only a pilot aboard. The aircraft has a wingspan of 106 feet, a fuselage length of 76 feet, and weighs more than 25,000 pounds. Heart Aerospace reported the test flight consumed just $5 worth of electricity in total energy costs, though the figure excludes crew, airport fees, maintenance, and battery degradation expenses.
Heart Aerospace founder and CEO Anders Forslund said the flight demonstrated that electric propulsion can now operate at the scale of a commercial airliner, calling it a proof of concept for the technology at that size. The X1 serves as a testbed for Heart's primary commercial product, the hybrid-electric ES-30, which the company aims to bring into passenger service by 2031. Heart claims the ES-30 could be up to 40 percent cheaper to operate than conventional regional aircraft of similar size, owing to reduced fuel and maintenance costs, and United, Air Canada, and JSX have already expressed interest in the aircraft.
Heart Aerospace was originally founded in Gothenburg, Sweden, before relocating its headquarters to Los Angeles in April 2025.
