ST Engineering Expands Nacelle MRO Capacity with Stockholm Facility Enlargement and Global Network Growth

What happened
ST Engineering is expanding nacelle maintenance, repair and overhaul capacity at its Stockholm facility, adding approximately 5,000 m² to its current footprint of roughly 15,000 m², with the project scheduled for completion in early 2027. The expansion is intended to meet growing demand for widebody nacelle work as airlines retain aircraft longer amid new-fleet delivery delays and engine shop constraints.

Assad Chamoun, vice president for nacelle MRO services EMEA, outlined the company's strategy during a media presentation at the Stockholm site, describing an integrated model combining OEM manufacturing, licensed repair capability and traditional MRO services within a single organisation. Since acquiring Middle River Aerostructure Systems in 2019, ST Engineering has become an OEM manufacturer for several nacelle structures and operates under licensing agreements with Collins Aerospace and Safran. Its global nacelle network includes facilities in Baltimore, China, Singapore and Stockholm.
Chamoun said the strategy focuses on next-generation platforms, particularly the Airbus A320neo, Boeing 737 MAX and 787. He pointed to ongoing supply chain pressure for CFM International Leap-1A-powered aircraft, noting that ST Engineering has invested in high-value structural assemblies and components with long lead times to reduce turnaround times. The company also manages induction slots by accepting work only when material availability and repair planning are secured in advance.
On regional service centres, ST Engineering confirmed it is developing a network to bring maintenance capability closer to airline customers and heavy maintenance locations. It currently has operational capability in Singapore and through joint ventures in Australia and the Americas, with further locations planned but not disclosed. The regional facilities are designed to complement, rather than replace, the company's full-capability MRO hubs, with major overhaul work remaining at the larger sites.

This expansion sits within a broader shift in aftermarket nacelle work: as new-aircraft deliveries slip and engine shops run at capacity, airlines keep existing widebody and narrowbody fleets flying longer, and that shifts more structural repair volume onto MRO providers rather than manufacturers of new units. An integrated model that pairs OEM manufacturing rights with licensed repair capability lets a provider like ST Engineering capture work across the full lifecycle of a nacelle component instead of ceding repair volume to third parties.
The segment's economics depend heavily on lead-time management. Pre-investing in structural assemblies and components with long lead times, and accepting induction slots only once material and repair planning are locked in, is a direct response to supply chain pressure on Leap-1A-powered aircraft — it trades upfront capital for shorter turnaround once an aircraft is in the shop. Regional service centres extend this logic geographically, positioning lower-tier capability near airline bases while reserving heavy overhaul for larger hubs such as Stockholm, Baltimore, China and Singapore.
What remains to be seen is where the undisclosed additional regional locations land, and whether the Stockholm expansion timeline holds against continued engine shop constraints. The pace at which further regional sites are named will indicate how quickly ST Engineering intends to scale the network beyond its current Singapore, Australia and Americas footprint.
