Estimated installation costs for Starlink range from $290,000–$330,000 for mid-size jets, requiring 10–12 days of downtime, to $350,000–$400,000-plus for super mid-size and large jets, requiring 12–15 days of downtime; typical system weight is 75–80 lbs, and the company recently doubled its monthly data rates.

Gogo launched its LEO platform, Gogo Galileo, internationally in 2024, using the Eutelsat/OneWeb network of 650 satellites. More than 150 aircraft had been fitted with the HDX antenna at the time of writing, with the larger FDX antenna expected in Q3 2026 and certifications reaching maturity in late 2026. HDX antenna installation costs are estimated at $200,000–$230,000 for mid-size jets and $240,000–$260,000-plus for super mid-size and large jets, with downtime of 10–15 days depending on aircraft size. HDX data speeds reach 60 Mbps download and 11 Mbps upload, while the FDX delivers 195 Mbps download.

Amazon is building a constellation targeting 3,236 satellites positioned 590–630 km above Earth, with approximately 400 in orbit at the time of writing. A key differentiator is integration with Amazon Web Services; Delta Air Lines selected Amazon over Starlink on account of this feature. Estimated installation costs are $225,000–$300,000 for mid-size jets and $275,000–$375,000 for super mid-size and large jets, with 10–15 days downtime, and typical system weight of 75–95 lbs. Data speeds are projected at 100–350 Mbps average and up to 1 Gbps maximum.

Viasat announced its intention to enter the LEO market in April 2025, partnering with Telesat as its network provider through a product called Telesat Lightspeed LEO. The Telesat constellation will consist of 200 high-capacity satellites positioned at 1,300 km altitude, approximately twice the altitude of Starlink and Eutelsat satellites. Viasat plans to integrate Telesat Lightspeed LEO capacity into its JetXP offering, combining GEO and LEO technologies, with Viasat and Telesat targeting a market launch in early 2028. Installation costs and system weights for the Viasat/Telesat offering have not yet been confirmed.

Industry impact & what to watch

A two-vendor market becoming a four-vendor market is a familiar shift in satellite connectivity, and analysts point to the earlier move from GEO to LEO in the wider satcom industry as the comparable episode: competition there put downward pressure on hardware prices and monthly data rates, or at minimum kept them stable. The same dynamic is now expected as Amazon and Viasat line up against incumbents Starlink and Gogo.

The segment works on a mix of upfront hardware cost, aircraft downtime, and recurring data fees, and all four vendors have converged on the same physical approach, an electronically steered antenna mounted on top of the fuselage, even as their constellations differ sharply in altitude, satellite count and maturity. Starlink and Gogo already have paying installed bases and FAA certification in hand, while Amazon is still building out its constellation and Viasat has not yet confirmed pricing or weight figures for its Telesat-based offering.

What to watch is the pace at which Amazon's constellation reaches operational scale and whether Gogo's FDX antenna clears certification on schedule in late 2026, since both would convert projected specifications into deliverable service. Viasat and Telesat's stated 2028 target for JetXP's LEO integration is the next dated milestone that would test whether a four-vendor field actually forms, and because LEO satellites typically need replacement every four to five years, buyers weighing any of these systems now face a genuine question of upgrade path compatibility as the constellations themselves keep evolving.
