Hollywood Burbank Airport Ends Operations at 1930 Terminal Ahead of New Terminal Opening

Why It MattersReplacing a terminal that no longer met FAA design guidelines or California seismic standards, and freeing its footprint for taxiway extensions, shows how infrastructure rules are pushing older regional airports to rebuild.

The final flights departed Hollywood Burbank Airport's old terminal on Monday night, October 12, 2026, ahead of the grand opening of a new terminal on Tuesday. The new building, located around the corner at Hollywood Way and Winona Avenue, is approximately 50% bigger than the old one but has 14 gates, the same as its predecessor. Airport officials say it offers more amenities and a modern take on the airport's old Hollywood vibe.

The original 1930 terminal is set to be demolished soon because it sits too close to the runway and presents safety hazards, according to airport officials. Once it is gone, the airport plans to use the space to extend its taxiways and expand the active airfield.

Executive Director John Hatanaka said the legacy terminal served the airport for 96 years but no longer meets FAA design guidelines or California seismic standards. He said officials worked to preserve the hassle-free feel of the airport, including the experience of walking from the terminal onto the tarmac before boarding. Travelers interviewed said they were excited about the new facility but hoped flying in and out of the airport would remain as simple as before.
