Amazon Pauses Prime Air Drone Delivery Plans for North Haven, Connecticut

Why It MattersThe pause highlights mounting local and legal resistance that could slow Amazon's push to expand drone delivery to nearly 500 U.S. communities by year-end.

Amazon has paused plans to launch Prime Air drone deliveries from its North Haven, Connecticut warehouse while it holds additional meetings with residents and government officials. North Haven First Selectman Michael Freda announced the pause after speaking with an Amazon representative, saying the drone initiative is now on hold and that Amazon agreed to meet with the public, Connecticut lawmakers, and the Regional Mayor's Council before proceeding.

The proposal had received local planning approval in May and remained subject to state and federal review. Connecticut's Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has extended its public comment period for the North Haven proposal through October 15. The planned operation would use Amazon's MK30 delivery drone, which has a maximum takeoff weight of 83.2 pounds and an operating radius of 7.5 miles, with Amazon proposing as many as 1,000 flights per day from individual Prime Air delivery centers.

Several Connecticut lawmakers have raised concerns about noise and effects on wildlife, while Amazon spokesperson Jack Stelzner said the drones are fully electric and produce no exhaust emissions. The pause comes as Amazon pursues a broader Prime Air expansion it says could bring drone delivery to nearly 500 U.S. communities by the end of the year, an expansion facing a lawsuit from a coalition of 15 states and Harris County, Texas, against the FAA over its approval of a nationwide framework for commercial drone delivery.
