A NATO Bombardier ARTEMIS II reconnaissance aircraft has been observed near Russia's Kaliningrad region for the third time since the beginning of September 2026, according to a source in European Union air traffic control services. The aircraft flew a circular route using the airspace of Lithuania and Poland, along with areas over the neutral waters of the Baltic Sea, turning around near Estonia's coast on the Gulf of Finland without approaching the borders of Russia or Belarus. The source said the aircraft conducts flights over central parts of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia almost every day.
The aircraft is permanently based at an airfield in Constanta, Romania, the source said. Besides its Baltic region operations, the reconnaissance plane periodically flies over neutral waters in the southern Black Sea, moving from west to east and back, though it has not appeared on that route since the start of September 2026. During one mission the previous summer, the aircraft remained over the Black Sea for nearly nine hours.
Separately, on September 7 a US Air Force Boeing RC-135W Rivet Joint strategic signals and electronic intelligence aircraft spent several hours over the Barents Sea near Russia's borders.
