Mandalay International Airport resumes normal operations after drone attack

Flights at Mandalay International Airport, also known as Tada-U International Airport, have returned to normal operations following a drone attack, the airport's Operations Control Center said. Myanmar carrier Air Thanlwin announced on social media that flights originally scheduled to divert to a nearby airport would instead resume at Mandalay International Airport according to their original schedules and timetables.

The airport and surrounding areas came under a drone attack on Thursday, the Global New Light of Myanmar reported. Air defence monitoring systems intercepted the drones, and no casualties were reported. Security forces are cooperating with the public to investigate the incident.

Drone incursions near airports typically force a binary response: divert traffic to a nearby field or hold operations until the threat is cleared, and the length of that interruption depends on how fast defence systems can neutralize the threat and how quickly controllers can recheck the airspace. Here, interception plus a rapid return to scheduled operations kept the disruption to a short diversion window rather than a sustained shutdown.

For carriers like Air Thanlwin, the immediate operational question is always schedule integrity — whether diverted flights can be folded back into the original timetable without cascading delays elsewhere in the network.
