Bombardier Global 8000 Receives UK CAA Approval to Land at London City Airport

What happened
Bombardier announced that its Global 8000 business jet has received approval from the U.K. Civil Aviation Authority to land at London City Airport, effective immediately. The clearance applies to Global 8000 aircraft registered in jurisdictions where the aircraft's steep approach supplement has already been approved by the relevant aviation authority, with certification in other jurisdictions still ongoing.

The Global 8000 entered service in December 2025 and is described by Bombardier as the fastest civil aircraft since the Concorde, with a top speed of Mach 0.95 and a range of 8,000 nautical miles. It has a cabin altitude of 2,691 ft., which Bombardier says is the lowest in business aviation production. London City Airport is considered one of the world's most operationally demanding airports because of its steep approach requirements, imposed for noise-abatement compliance, and its very short runway. Bombardier said the aircraft's wing design, including leading-edge slats, and its braking systems enable it to meet those requirements.
Previously, passengers arriving in London aboard larger business jets such as the Global 8000 typically used alternative airports including Farnborough or Luton. Bombardier said access to London City Airport is expected to save Global 8000 passengers up to 60 to 90 minutes in ground transfer time compared with those alternatives, and that the approval enables nonstop operations to the airport from destinations including Singapore, Los Angeles, Honolulu, and Buenos Aires. Stephen McCullough, Executive Vice President, Engineering, Product Development and Bombardier Defense, said London City Airport's steep approach requirement and short runway make it "amongst one of the world's most challenging airports," and called access to the airfield "another testament to the Global 8000's engineering excellence." Bombardier operates a fleet of more than 5,200 customer aircraft and maintains 10 service centres across six countries.

Because the U.K. approval currently applies only to aircraft registered in jurisdictions that have separately approved the steep approach supplement, operators and buyers elsewhere cannot assume immediate access; registration jurisdiction becomes a practical factor in where an aircraft can fly nonstop into central London. The nonstop routes Bombardier named, including Singapore, Los Angeles, Honolulu, and Buenos Aires, only become usable in practice once an operator's home jurisdiction clears the same supplement.
