What happened
Layang-Layang Aerospace Sdn Bhd has voluntarily grounded its entire fleet of BO 105 helicopters and all other aircraft fitted with Rolls-Royce 250-series engines, a precautionary step announced two days after a Flying Doctor Service (FDS) helicopter crash in Sarawak killed five people. Malaysia Civil Aviation Authority (CAAM) chief executive officer Datuk Captain Norazman Mahmud disclosed the grounding at the Malaysia Aviation Safety Seminar (MASS) 2026 in Kuala Lumpur on September 10, describing it as the operator's own decision. "This grounding is precautionary. It should not be interpreted as an indication that the engine or any other particular component caused the accident," he said.

The five people killed were medical officer Dr Ainul Baraah Kamaruddin, 33; medical assistant Alexson Adit Henry, 31; and nurses Debra Moset, 40, and Jessie Paya Jok, 44. CAAM records show the crashed helicopter's Certificate of Airworthiness was valid until August 4, 2027, and its Certificate of Registration until July 28, 2029. Norazman said aircraft age alone does not determine airworthiness, provided the aircraft is maintained under its approved maintenance programme and continues to meet applicable airworthiness requirements.
The Air Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), under the Transport Ministry, is independently investigating the crash. Under ICAO Annex 13 standards, AAIB is required to issue a preliminary report within 30 days of the accident and a final report within one year. CAAM said it is monitoring the operator's grounding and inspection programme and verifying relevant regulatory, operator and pilot records. Norazman urged the public and media not to speculate on the cause before the investigation concludes, saying it was premature to attribute the accident to technical issues, weather conditions, human factors or any other cause.
