Naples Capodichino Airport to Close for All of November 2026 for Runway Rehabilitation

What happened
Naples Capodichino Airport will close for the entire month of November 2026, from 1 to 30 November, while its sole runway, 06/24, undergoes major rehabilitation works including its connections with the taxiway system. Airport operator GESAC announced the planned closure, and Italy's civil aviation authority ENAC (Ente Nazionale per l'Aviazione Civile) said November was chosen because it is the airport's lowest-traffic month. The project was first publicised in 2025, but airlines have now confirmed arrangements for affected passengers.
Lufthansa Group will suspend all Naples services during the closure, affecting Lufthansa flights to Frankfurt and Munich, Austrian Airlines flights to Vienna, and Swiss flights to Zurich. Where possible, affected passengers will be automatically rebooked onto Lufthansa Group services via Rome Fiumicino Airport, or may request one free rebooking or a refund. In certain cases, travellers rerouted through Rome may also be able to claim the cost of rail or bus transport to their original destination airport.
ITA Airways will operate its Milan Linate service via Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport during November, while its Rome–Naples route will be replaced by bus services. Eurowings is also scheduled to use Salerno for flights from Düsseldorf and Stuttgart. Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport is approximately 60 kilometres south-east of Naples. GESAC's published November destination list for Salerno includes services involving Amsterdam, Barcelona, Dubai, Luxembourg, Madrid, Milan Malpensa, Paris Orly and Sharm el-Sheikh, though not every Naples service will necessarily transfer to Salerno.
Naples ranked as Italy's fourth-busiest airport in 2025, handling 13,246,940 passengers. ENAC recorded 87,358 total aircraft movements at the airport during the year.

This closure shows what happens when an airport with only one runway needs structural work: there is no partial-capacity option, so the operator and regulator picked the lightest-traffic month and built a month-long shutdown around it rather than staged overnight or seasonal closures. For a facility handling over 13 million passengers and tens of thousands of movements a year, even the quietest month still forces every carrier to make a choice between suspension, diversion or substitution.
The carrier responses split along two different models. Lufthansa Group chose full suspension with passenger rebooking through a distant hub, Rome Fiumicino, while ITA Airways and Eurowings chose to keep serving the region by shifting operations to a smaller nearby airport, Salerno Costa d'Amalfi, roughly 60 kilometres away. Bus substitution for the Rome–Naples route shows that some short-haul city pairs are not considered worth diverting to an alternate airport at all.
What remains to be seen is how completely Salerno's published destination list matches what actually operated from Naples, since GESAC itself has flagged that not every route will transfer. The rebooking and refund terms Lufthansa Group has offered, including possible reimbursement of surface transport from Rome, will be the practical test of how well passengers are protected once the closure begins on 1 November.
