webAI Launches On-Device AI Tool That Cut Aircraft Manual Search From 16 Hours to 20 Minutes on a Single iPad

Why It MattersOn-device AI search tools could reshape how maintenance operators access technical manuals in connectivity-restricted environments like flight lines and factory floors.

Austin, Texas-based webAI has launched webAI Frontline, an on-device AI system that searches large technical document sets without an internet connection. In a pilot at a European regional aircraft maintenance operation, the system reduced documentation search time during a single engine change from 16 hours to 20 minutes, returning answers with a cited source page in under two seconds.

The complete approved manual set for the operation's regional jet fleet, roughly 34,000 pages, ran on a single iPad, with all documentation and queries staying on the device rather than in the cloud. webAI says this suits flight lines, factory floors and hospital equipment rooms where connectivity is unreliable or prohibited and sensitive documents cannot be sent to external servers.

Frontline uses a proprietary architecture that cuts its in-memory footprint by a factor of 30, paired with an embedding model webAI built for dense technical documents, allowing a full manual set to run on standard Apple Silicon hardware with sub-two-second retrieval; recommended hardware is an iPad Pro with an M4 or M5 chip and at least 12 GB of RAM. Unlike cloud-based AI services, Frontline does not charge per query, and CEO and co-founder David Stout said the goal was to make manual search fast enough to happen right where the work is, with the source page attached to every answer. Frontline is available now through co-development engagements, with webAI working directly with customers to build and tune initial document sets using their own approved material.
