Russia Restricts Airspace Over Kapustin Yar Missile Test Site Until 3 October
Why It MattersRecurring NOTAM-based airspace closures around Russian military test sites add to the patchwork of restricted zones operators must track across the region.
Russia has restricted airspace above the Kapustin Yar missile test site in Astrakhan Oblast from 28 September to 3 October 2026, with the closures in force daily from 09:00 to 19:00 Kyiv time — covering six calendar days during daytime hours only, not a round-the-clock shutdown, according to NOTAM aviation notices.

Russian authorities have given no official explanation for the restrictions. The NOTAM does not specify the type of missile involved, the nature of planned activities, or the purpose of any operations, which could relate to missile tests, military exercises, technical work or other activity.
The closure has been linked to the Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missile, since previous launches of that system against Ukraine were associated with Kapustin Yar; Russia first used the Oreshnik against Ukraine on 21 November 2024, striking Dnipro. As of the evening of 28 September, there was no confirmation of preparations for an Oreshnik launch or any planned strike on Ukraine, and the nature of activities at the site during the restriction period remains unknown.
