Repeated Drone-Related Airport Restrictions Cause Flight Delays and Cancellations Across Russia, Disrupting Tourism Operations
Why It MattersRecurring airport closures strain schedule reliability for Russia–Türkiye leisure traffic, pushing hotels, transfer providers and tour operators to absorb shifting arrival and departure times.
Temporary airport restrictions imposed after Ukrainian drone attacks on Russia are causing recurring disruptions to air traffic, with delays and cancellations at major hubs including Moscow and Sochi affecting airlines, passengers, tour operators, transfer companies and hotels. Delays on flights from Russia to Türkiye can change tourists' hotel arrival times and airport transfers, while disruptions to return flights can require hotels and transfer providers to adjust check-out schedules, room planning and transfers.

On 20 September, Kommersant reported more than 400 flights delayed at Moscow airports, with Sheremetyevo recording more than 200 delays and about 30 cancellations. At Sochi, 68 arriving and departing flights had been delayed or cancelled as of 16:00 local time. On 26 September, Sochi Airport was temporarily closed seven times and 34 flights were delayed, with some aircraft diverted to alternative airports. On 2 October, 643 flights were delayed and 35 cancelled across 24 airports during the morning, according to departure and arrival boards; Rosaviatsiya reported restrictions at 21 airports, including Vnukovo, Domodedovo, Sochi, Samara, Kazan and Saratov, and services to Istanbul, Antalya, Dubai, Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh were affected.
On 9 October, restrictions were introduced simultaneously at Moscow's four airports: Vnukovo, Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo and Zhukovsky. Flightradar24 data showed more than 40% of Vnukovo flights delayed, with an average delay of 102 minutes. Overnight on 10 October into 11 October, drone debris fell within Sochi Airport's grounds and caused a fire in an administrative building, which was extinguished with no injuries reported; at least 32 departures were delayed by more than two hours, with some delays reaching 14–15 hours.
Flight cancellations in Russia in the first nine months of 2026 doubled compared with the same period of 2025. Flights delayed by more than one hour rose 70% to 128,000, flights delayed by more than three hours totalled 51,000, and 7.6 million passengers waited more than three hours for departure. Not every delay results in an extra overnight stay or late check-out, as arrangements depend on hotel availability and individual booking conditions.
