Moscow Airports Hit by Repeated Flight Restrictions; 14 Flights Divert to Nizhny Novgorod

Why It MattersRecurring airspace restrictions across Russia's busiest hub, following 993 such events in August alone, point to a persistent operational risk reshaping scheduling and diversion planning for carriers serving Moscow.

Moscow's major airports faced multiple rounds of flight restrictions overnight and into the following day, forcing 14 aircraft bound for the capital to divert to Nizhny Novgorod's Chkalov Airport. Sheremetyevo Airport was suspended three separate times, with Russia's Federal Air Transport Agency imposing the initial restrictions on arrivals and departures overnight before lifting them in the morning; a third, later restriction lasted just under an hour before operations resumed shortly after 10 a.m.

Vnukovo and Domodedovo airports initially operated only in coordination with aviation authorities before both suspended arrivals and departures entirely during the night, and Zhukovsky Airport was also included in the wider restrictions. All four airports reopened during the morning, with Russia's Federal Air Transport Agency stating the measures were introduced for flight safety.

Nizhny Novgorod Airport confirmed it accepted all 14 diverted flights while the restrictions were in place, with airline and airport staff providing food and drinks to passengers during the wait. Several diverted flights resumed their journeys to Moscow once restrictions lifted, while others remained on the ground awaiting departure slots.

Temporary airspace restrictions have become a recurring operational risk for Russian aviation in 2026. A previous major disruption in September left more than 400 Moscow flights delayed after Sheremetyevo, Vnukovo, Domodedovo and Zhukovsky all temporarily restricted operations, and aviation-security data showed Russian airports recorded 993 temporary restriction events during August alone.
