How Private Jets Operate at Commercial Airports: Slots, FBOs, and Customs Requirements

Private jets share runways with scheduled airline traffic at major commercial airports, but doing so requires more coordination than simply picking the nearest hub. Not every commercial airport readily accommodates private operations, and some restrict activity during peak periods or require advance permission. In the United States, the FAA administers slot programs and scheduling controls at congested airports including New York's JFK and LaGuardia, meaning private aircraft cannot always arrive at a freely chosen time, while Los Angeles International applies airport-specific procedures such as prior-permission requirements for certain operations.

Where slot controls apply, a runway arrival or departure must be authorized for a specific period, so operators check slot availability and local restrictions before finalizing an itinerary. Aircraft such as the Gulfstream or Bombardier Global can reach almost any destination, but runway access at a given moment remains governed by the airport authority, and runway performance, taxiway configuration, parking availability and ramp space can further constrain large-cabin, long-range jets even at airports with long enough runways for commercial airliners.

Arriving passengers are typically received at a Fixed-Base Operator rather than a main commercial terminal, where chauffeur coordination, baggage handling, catering, security and aircraft servicing are managed separately from public airport areas. International arrivals into the United States must also comply with Customs and Border Protection procedures, including arrival at a designated airport of entry and advance submission of passenger and flight information, coordinated among flight operators, FBO personnel and government authorities.
