Joby Aviation Advances Toward FAA Certification With 50,000 Miles Logged and Toyota Partnership

Why It MattersAdvanced-air-mobility certification progress alongside major automaker and airline backing signals the eVTOL segment moving closer to commercial operations despite continued cash burn risk.

Joby Aviation is developing an electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft intended to operate as an air taxi, taking off vertically and flying forward like a conventional plane. The company is now in the fifth and final stage of the FAA's type certification process, with for-credit flight testing expected later this year, and has logged more than 50,000 miles across its eVTOL fleet while demonstrating a piloted transition. Joby has five S4 eVTOLs in service and 12 more in production, and plans to begin flights in Texas in September through the White House's eVTOL Integration Pilot Program.

Toyota has committed approximately $894 million in total investment to Joby and entered a strategic manufacturing alliance to help scale aircraft production, with Delta and Uber also among the company's partners. Morgan Stanley projections cited estimate the global urban air mobility market could reach $1 trillion by 2040 and $9 trillion by 2050.

Despite this regulatory progress and its partnerships, Joby is not expected to generate significant revenue this year and continues to burn through cash, raising the risk of shareholder dilution if delays occur.
