Why It MattersGround handlers and caterers are committing to Sydney's second airport at launch, and dnata's phased build-out shows how new airports are served from legacy facilities until local infrastructure is ready.

dnata has launched operations at the new Western Sydney International Airport (WSI). dnata has invested in dedicated cargo and catering facilities at the airport, both under development. The cargo facility is expected to begin operations in December this year, followed by the catering facility in 2027. Until the catering centre opens, dnata will serve its airline customers at WSI from its catering facility at Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport. When it opens, the 3,250 sqm catering facility will be able to produce up to three million meals annually and is expected to create more than 200 direct jobs over the next decade.

Burt Sigsworth, Managing Director of dnata Airport Operations – Australia, said the opening marks a new chapter for Australian aviation and that the company is building a long-term presence at WSI, investing in infrastructure, technology and people. Gareth Rees, Regional Chief Executive Officer of dnata Catering & Retail – Australia and Southeast Asia, said the new facility represents a significant investment in the region and that the company aims to build relationships with local suppliers and producers.
