MTU Maintenance Breaks Ground on Over 100 Million Euro Hannover Expansion, Adding 200 Jobs

Why It MattersAdded widebody shop-visit and module-repair capacity at a major engine MRO site shows providers building out space for GEnx and future GE9X work as demand for that support grows.

MTU Maintenance, the maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) arm of MTU Aero Engines, broke ground on an extension of more than 10,000 square meters at its Hannover, Germany, facility. The project adds 7,700 square meters of production space and 2,200 square meters of office space, taking the site's total size to over 110,000 square meters.

The investment exceeds 100 million euros and is partly supported by Wirtschaftsförderungs-Gesellschaft Langenhagen Flughafen mbH. The extension is expected to create 200 new jobs and is slated to come online in late 2028, raising site capacity by more than 20 percent.

The new space will be used predominantly for widebody engine shop visits and module repair, such as the GEnx and, in future, GE9X turbine center frames. Space freed up in the existing facility will be used and optimized for key engine repairs. Jaap Beijer, Senior Vice President MRO Operations at MTU and Managing Director of the Hannover site, said the site was the birthplace of MRO for MTU and that the expansion ensures its key role within MTU's maintenance network.

MTU entered the MRO business with the founding of the Hannover facility in 1979. MTU Maintenance has since grown into the world's second-largest engine MRO provider by shop visit volume, with over 30 engine types in its portfolio and more than 7,500 employees. The Hannover site, a 100 percent subsidiary of MTU Aero Engines, handles widebody and narrowbody engines including the GE CF6-80C2, GE90-110/-115B and GEnx TCF, as well as the Pratt & Whitney PW1100G-JM and the IAE V2500, and is MTU's center of competence for high-tech repairs.
