Why It MattersMissile and drone attacks on Saudi airports, with Riyadh's main airport suspended, constrain air access to the Kingdom and push business and charter travellers toward alternative airports or overland routes.

The U.S. Mission to Saudi Arabia issued a security alert dated October 20, 2026. The State Department's Travel Advisory for Saudi Arabia stands at Level 3: Reconsider Travel, citing the risk of drone and missile targeting of American interests by Iran and the Iranian-supported Houthis, armed conflict, terrorism, exit bans, and local laws regarding social media activity. A Worldwide Caution also advises Americans everywhere to exercise increased caution.

U.S. Mission Issues Security Alert for Saudi Arabia: Airport Restrictions, Riyadh Airport Suspended, Level 3 Travel Advi

U.S. government employees working in Saudi Arabia require special authorization from the Chief of Mission to use any airport in the Kingdom, following recent missile and UAV attacks on airports. Operations at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh remain suspended. U.S. citizens are warned of potential attacks on airports, airspace closures, flight cancellations and travel disruptions, and are urged to check departure status directly with the airline and the airport. Private car, train and bus options may offer alternatives to air travel.

Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Interior warns that filming, publishing or sharing information related to counter-missile and drone activity and their impact sites exposes people to legal liability. U.S. citizens have been detained for not adhering to these regulations, including for photographing government buildings, airports and impact sites. U.S. citizens are also reminded to follow national alerts issued by Saudi Arabia's Civil Defense via cellular broadcast.

U.S. government employees are barred from traveling within 20 miles of the Yemen border and need special authorization to travel to the provinces of Jizan, Asir and Najran and to the cities of Qatif, Yanbu and Taif. Regular and emergency consular services remain available to U.S. citizens. In the event of an aerial attack, people should stay away from glass doors, windows and debris and monitor official guidance. Americans are advised to avoid demonstrations, large gatherings and areas with a heavy police presence, and to follow local authorities' instructions.
