Finland Imposes Temporary Air and Maritime Restrictions in Eastern Gulf of Finland Near Russian Border

Why It MattersRepeated short-notice restrictions near St Petersburg add recurring airspace-planning constraints for operators flying the Baltic region, though the affected areas themselves are small.

The Finnish Defence Forces have established temporary restricted areas in the eastern Gulf of Finland, close to the Russian border. The airspace restriction took effect at 05:42 and the maritime restriction at 05:56 on 16 October 2026. The area is strategically significant because of its proximity to Russia and the approaches to St Petersburg. Details of the affected areas and applicable restrictions are available through Fintraffic, Finland's national traffic management operator.

The creation of restricted areas does not necessarily mean Finnish airspace has been violated. Finland has introduced similar restrictions several times in recent months. In July 2026, temporary restrictions in the Gulf of Finland were linked to Ukrainian drone strikes on targets inside Russia, including facilities in the Leningrad region; Finnish military authorities said those measures were precautionary, meant to protect civilians and allow the armed forces to respond to potential aerial threats. On 14 August, Finland again restricted air and maritime traffic in the eastern Gulf of Finland.
