Jizan Airport Reported Closed Until 15 October After 5 October Attacks; Reopening Unconfirmed

Why It MattersA NOTAM end time marks the limit of a restriction, not a restart, so airlines and passengers on closed-airport routes plan around airline confirmation, while neighbouring airports carry their own restrictions.

What happened

King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Jazan (IATA: GIZ, ICAO: OEGN) is reported closed around the clock as of 14 October 2026. NOTAMs cited by aviation outlet ch-aviation close the airport from 7 October until 18:00 Saudi time (15:00 UTC) on Thursday 15 October 2026.

Jizan Airport Reported Closed Until 15 October After 5 October Attacks; Reopening Unconfirmed

Saudi Arabia's General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) reported that attacks on the evening of 5 October 2026 targeted the Jazan airport and Najran International Airport, causing injuries and material damage. As of 14 October, no GACA or airport notice confirming a reopening or an extension had been found. The NOTAM end time is not a confirmed reopening, and flights will not automatically resume when it expires.

Several governments advise against travel to Jazan Province. No Jizan-specific cancellation notice had been found on the Saudia, flyadeal or flynas websites as of 14 October, though flights scheduled before the NOTAM end time should be treated as not operating unless the airline confirms otherwise. flyadeal says it contacts passengers on cancelled flights by SMS or email; if no alternative departing within six hours of the original time is offered, the amount paid becomes a one-year credit, or a refund can be requested through its online form.

The airport lies about 3 km from central Jazan and has one passenger terminal plus a royal terminal. Saudia, flyadeal and flynas serve it, with Riyadh and Jeddah the busiest routes.

Neighbouring airports and airspace advice

The nearby alternatives are also affected. Abha (AHB) has a reported nightly closure from 18:00 to 06:00 Saudi time until 15 October, and Najran (EAM) is reported closed all day until 18:00 Saudi time on 15 October, with reopening unconfirmed.

EASA's Saudi Arabia bulletin, revised on 9 October, advises airlines not to operate in specified parts of the Jeddah flight information region and to exercise caution elsewhere in the country's airspace.

Industry impact & what to watch

A NOTAM validity window describes the limit of a restriction, not a restart. Operators, schedulers and ground handlers at an airport closed after an attack typically wait for an authority notice or an airline confirmation before putting aircraft and crews back on the schedule, and a lapse of the stated end time can be followed by an extension. Flights timed shortly after that end time carry the same uncertainty as those inside it.

When the airports that would normally absorb diverted traffic also run restrictions, as Abha and Najran do here, the region has little slack, and the burden shifts to passengers and airlines handling cancellations, credits and rebooking under each carrier's own rules.

The next point that would settle the question is a GACA or airport notice, or a new NOTAM, issued around the 18:00 Saudi time deadline on 15 October. Airline confirmations from Saudia, flyadeal and flynas for Jazan flights would be the practical signal that service has resumed.
