Isle of Man Airport runway closed over edge-lighting fault, easyJet Liverpool flight cancelled
Why It MattersA single lighting-system failure at a one-runway island airport can halt all operations at once, leaving carriers dependent on one piece of infrastructure and shifting disruption costs onto airlines and passengers.
The runway at Isle of Man Airport (Ronaldsway) was closed on the evening of Monday 26 October due to an issue with its runway edge lights. A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) update stated the runway would remain closed until 8.45pm. A NOTAM is an official alert informing pilots and air traffic controllers of hazards, changes or restrictions affecting flights.

The closure disrupted flights. The 3.50pm easyJet service to Liverpool, EZY518, was cancelled after initially being delayed. Passengers had boarded the aircraft at around 5.30pm while awaiting an update, and the flight had been rescheduled to depart at 6.30pm before the cancellation was confirmed. It was the last departing flight scheduled from the airport that day, and other flights in and out of Ronaldsway that evening were also cancelled.
EasyJet apologised to passengers, saying the runway had been closed due to a failure of the airport's lighting system. The airline said it was working to minimise the delay and would operate the flight as soon as it was safe to do so, adding that the disruption was outside its control and considered an 'extraordinary circumstance'. Isle of Man Airport has been contacted for comment.
