Canada Raises Saudi Arabia Travel Advisory to 'Avoid Non-Essential Travel' After Missile and Drone Attacks on Airports

Why It MattersA government airspace warning against a major Gulf flight region adds routing and risk-assessment burdens for operators of Canada-registered aircraft planning Saudi and wider Red Sea corridor movements.

The Government of Canada has placed Saudi Arabia under an "avoid non-essential travel" advisory, updated in mid-October 2026, citing deteriorating security linked to the conflict involving Yemen's Houthi forces. The advisory says armed groups operating from Yemen are using missiles, drones and other projectiles against targets inside the kingdom, and that debris from intercepted projectiles can fall over populated areas, including in and around major cities. It applies nationwide, with particular emphasis on areas near the Yemeni border and along the Red Sea and Persian Gulf coasts.

The update follows a series of attacks on Saudi civilian airports in October 2026. At least one attack in Riyadh killed more than a dozen people and injured hundreds. An attack on King Fahd International Airport in Dammam killed a Saudi resident, and authorities temporarily curtailed operations there. Earlier Houthi campaigns hit airports in Abha, Jizan and Najran, as well as energy installations and other infrastructure, and flight cancellations, rerouted services and extended security procedures have been noted at terminals.

Separately, a Canadian airspace security warning for the Jeddah Flight Information Region recommends that Canadian air operators and owners of Canada-registered aircraft avoid entering that airspace because of the risk from missiles, drones and air defense activity. Airspace risk platforms say the notice was refreshed in October 2026 and remains in force through at least late October.

Canadian passport holders in Saudi Arabia are urged to register their presence through federal online services, keep documents, emergency funds and exit plans current, follow local security instructions, and avoid areas near military sites and critical infrastructure. Travelers are also advised to check whether their travel insurance remains valid for a destination under an elevated advisory.
