AIESL Wins FAA Approval to Expand Boeing 777 Base Maintenance Limits

Why It MattersFAA clearance for wide-body base maintenance widens the pool of overseas MRO capacity available to operators that need US-compliant work, and adds an Indian competitor in a market long concentrated elsewhere.

AIESL announced that the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Principal Maintenance Inspector had accepted its proposal to expand the Boeing 777 series limitations under the company's Airframe rating. The approved limits have been extended from 4,000 days, 36,000 flight hours and 18,000 flight cycles to 6,000 days, 108,000 flight hours and 28,000 flight cycles. The expanded approval covers base maintenance for the Boeing 777-200/300 powered by GE90 engines.

Base maintenance involves more extensive scheduled inspections and maintenance work than routine line maintenance, which is generally performed between flights. The approval strengthens AIESL's position as an FAA-approved repair station able to work on wide-body aircraft used by airlines worldwide. FAA approval matters for maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) providers seeking to serve operators that require maintenance to meet US regulatory requirements, and an expanded approval allows work within the scope and limitations authorised by the regulator.

Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu welcomed the development, saying it showed Indian aviation engineering was meeting international standards and could serve the global industry. "Indian MRO has arrived and we're ready to take on the world!" Naidu said in a post on X, congratulating the AIESL team. He said building world-class capabilities in India and serving global aviation requirements would help advance the government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

India has been seeking to expand its domestic MRO industry to reduce dependence on overseas maintenance facilities, retain more aviation-related expenditure within the country and attract international customers.
