ACMI Start-Ups Face Heavy Pre-Revenue Capital Needs, Typically Funded by Strategic Equity Before Debt

Why It MattersCapital access, not aircraft supply alone, is the entry barrier for new wet-lease operators, favouring start-ups with strategic backers and contracted demand over those seeking cash-flow lending.

ACMI World

An ACMI financing guide published by ACMIWorld says an ACMI business is capital-hungry before it generates revenue. Aircraft deposits, pre-delivery payments, crew recruitment and training, maintenance reserves and working capital all fall due months before the first block hour is sold. The capital stack must cover aircraft access (security deposits, lease rentals, pre-delivery payments or acquisition financing), crew and training, maintenance reserves funded from day one, and working capital for fuel, airport charges, handling, insurance and payroll.

ACMI Start-Ups Face Heavy Pre-Revenue Capital Needs, Typically Funded by Strategic Equity Before Debt

On debt, the guide distinguishes aircraft-secured lending, which is easier to place because the lender has a recoverable asset, from corporate or cash-flow lending, which is much harder for start-ups with no trading history or contracted revenue. Private credit and non-bank lenders are described as offering flexible structures and faster execution at a higher cost of capital and a preference for newer, more liquid assets. Export credit agencies and development finance institutions can offer risk-sharing and longer tenors but move more slowly and have stricter eligibility rules.

The guide says start-ups usually rely on strategic equity for the pre-revenue phase, covering AOC application, certification and crew build-out. Secured aircraft debt or lease finance becomes available once the operating model and contract pipeline are credible. Lenders and investors test the contract pipeline, management track record, aircraft and lease terms, working-capital model, regulatory position and downside protection. The guide notes that terms vary by operator, jurisdiction and asset, and that it does not constitute financial or investment advice.
