Formosa Plastics New Smart's Chenghao Technology Wins ISCC EU Certification for Algae Oil, Targeting SAF Supply Chain

Formosa Plastics New Smart, a subsidiary of the Formosa Plastics Group, announced that its affiliate Chenghao Technology has obtained ISCC EU international sustainability and carbon certification for its algae oil technology, a step toward getting Taiwanese-made sustainable aviation fuel feedstock into the European supply chain. The certification, audited by Bureau Veritas as third-party verifier, covers microalgae cultivation, algae oil production, and greenhouse gas emissions calculation and management. Chenghao's high-efficiency algae strains, developed with heterotrophic fermentation mass production technology, achieve an oil content of 50% to 60%, and its 500-liter pilot production line has completed phased mass production and stability assessments, with the resulting algae oil meeting downstream refining feedstock specifications.
Wang Jui-yu, Chairwoman of both Formosa Plastics New Smart and Formosa Plastics Biomedical, outlined a dual-track SAF feedstock strategy: Formosa Plastics Biomedical will recycle waste cooking oil into SAF feedstock via a circular economy approach, while Formosa Plastics New Smart develops locally producible bio-based feedstock through microalgae technology, saying only diversified parallel approaches can enable Taiwan to build a self-reliant SAF feedstock supply system. General Manager Liu Hui-chi said the company will advance process scale-up, production efficiency improvement, and cost optimization, progressing from pilot production to mid-scale and commercial-scale validation, in line with Taiwan's government policy target of 5% SAF usage for Taiwanese airlines by 2030.
