ZeroAvia Leads HyPRIME Project to Test Liquid Hydrogen Infrastructure at UK Airports

Why It MattersSuccess in demonstrating turnaround-time hydrogen refuelling could accelerate infrastructure planning for zero-emission airport operations across the UK aviation sector.

ZeroAvia is leading the HyPRIME project, which aims to demonstrate liquid hydrogen fuelling infrastructure for commercial aviation at a live UK airport environment. The project will evaluate the operational, safety and economic requirements for introducing and scaling liquid hydrogen across UK airport networks, generating insights into refuelling procedures, infrastructure and the broader benefits of hydrogen adoption in aviation.

A key objective of HyPRIME is to demonstrate aircraft refuelling within standard commercial turnaround times. The project will also capture and utilise hydrogen boil-off gas to power hydrogen-fuelled ground support equipment and airport utilities, and will incorporate novel helium-free inerting technology to reduce gas wastage. By showing how aircraft, ground vehicles and airport energy systems can operate together using hydrogen, HyPRIME is intended to lay the groundwork for zero-emission airport operations and hydrogen-powered flight.

The project is supported by the UK Department for Transport. ZeroAvia describes itself as the world's only Design Organization Approved manufacturer focused solely on hydrogen-electric aviation, having achieved flight test and regulatory milestones with the FAA and UK CAA, and having secured more than 3,000 preorders for its propulsion and power systems from operators, OEMs and defence customers globally.
