FAA Opens 60-Day Comment Period on 'Priority Airspace' Corridors for Space Launches

What happened
The Federal Aviation Administration on Tuesday opened a 60-day request for public and industry input on how priority airspace for critical space launch corridors should be defined and operated. The request was published in the Federal Register on Aug. 25, with written comments due within 60 days of that publication.

The concept was directed under the 2026 National Space Transportation Policy, but the FAA has not yet established an operational definition for the corridors or determined which types of launches would qualify for priority treatment. Launch operators currently work with the FAA to establish Aircraft Hazard Areas to protect aircraft from launch vehicles and falling debris, and because much of U.S. launch activity originates from the same spaceports, similar Aircraft Hazard Areas are repeatedly used. The FAA said it does not currently use the term "space launch corridor" and wants to explore how the new concept would relate to existing Aircraft Hazard Areas. The agency said in the request that advance notification of the time, size and duration of Aircraft Hazard Areas is integral to maintaining both aviation safety and airspace efficiency.
The FAA is seeking input on how launch corridors could limit effects on airspace efficiency, what changes could be made to operational and coordination timelines, and what activities should qualify to activate a corridor. It is also asking whether commercial, civil or national security payloads should receive different consideration, and whether priority corridors should apply to all spaceports or only high-use or federal facilities. Additional questions cover possible fees, operational restrictions, emergency procedures, and how designating a corridor as "critical" could streamline launch timing. The FAA said the United States accounted for 217 of 329 launches worldwide in 2025, that more than half of U.S. launches originated from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and Kennedy Space Center in Florida, and that those two facilities together with Vandenberg Space Force Base in California accounted for 83% of U.S. launches. The agency projects that FAA-licensed launches and reentries could reach 10,000 annually by 2035.
Industry impact & what to watch
This is an early-stage rulemaking input request, not a new restriction, but it signals that the FAA expects launch activity to compete for the same airspace that business and commercial aircraft already use, at a scale current procedures were not built for. The jump from current activity toward a projected 10,000 annual licensed launches and reentries by 2035 is the number driving the review.
Aircraft Hazard Areas today are negotiated case by case around specific launches, with advance notice on timing, size and duration used to keep both sides safe and airspace usable. A formal corridor concept would let the FAA pre-designate or streamline certain routes or facilities, particularly the high-use Florida and California spaceports that already generate the bulk of U.S. launches, rather than negotiating hazard areas individually each time.
The open questions worth tracking are which payload types or facilities would get priority treatment, whether fees or new operational restrictions would apply, and how far in advance corridor activations would need to be published. The 60-day comment window closes roughly in late October, and the shape of any subsequent rulemaking will depend heavily on what operators and airspace users submit during that period.
