The UK government has launched Operation Blue Skies, a flight diversion trial using real-time artificial intelligence to reroute aircraft away from altitudes and weather conditions likely to produce contrails. Google is contributing its AI-powered forecasting platform on a pro-bono basis, providing £1.4 million in-kind through AI research expertise, with the trial focused on the Shanwick Oceanic Control Area in the eastern North Atlantic corridor.

Air traffic controllers will interpret the AI-generated data and instruct pilots to deviate from their flight paths by up to 2,000 feet to avoid airspace where ice crystals can form around engine soot particles. The trial will run over two winters, with roughly 20 to 40 test days per winter during periods of lower air traffic, and between 1% and 5% of flights in the trial period will be asked to alter their altitudes, a proportion project directors say is enough to show a statistically significant reduction in contrail formation.

Google technical programme manager Paul Hodgson said around 10,000 flights originating from hundreds of cities pass through Shanwick airspace during trial hours each year, and that a small percentage would be slightly deviated to prevent strongly warming contrails. The trial is also supported by NATS, Imperial College London, the University of Cambridge, and the UK Met Office, which will evaluate outcomes and provide independent verification of climate impact.
