When Private Jet Charter Makes Financial Sense for Business Travel: Key Data Points

Why It MattersThe findings reinforce charter's value proposition for multi-city and poorly-served routes, where EBAA data show 91% of routes it served in 2023 lacked direct scheduled flights.

Business aviation saves an average of 127 minutes per trip compared with the fastest scheduled commercial alternative, rising to more than 224 minutes at airports such as Nice, according to an Oxford Economics report commissioned by the European Business Aviation Association (EBAA). The same report found a delegation flying Brussels–Rome–Glasgow in 2021 to attend the G20 Summit and COP26 saved 11 hours over the equivalent scheduled route, and that multi-city trips generally save more than 6.5 hours.

When Private Jet Charter Makes Financial Sense for Business Travel: Key Data Points

Charter aircraft are billed by the flight hour and per aircraft rather than per seat, with indicative hourly rates ranging from around €2,500–€3,500 for a very light jet to €12,000–€18,000 for an ultra-long-range jet, varying by route, availability, season and aircraft positioning. Because cost is fixed per aircraft, the cost per traveller falls as group size grows, making charter look different once four or more colleagues share an aircraft and itinerary. Analysts note that multi-city itineraries requiring an overnight stay, team trips, and routes with poor or non-existent direct commercial service are the clearest cases where charter cost is offset by time and logistical savings.

EBAA data show business aviation serves around 1,500 airports across Europe, and that 91% of the routes it served in 2023 had no direct scheduled commercial flight. Business Jet Traveler has reported that in-flight data use rose 38% in a single quarter as passengers shifted to video calls and cloud-based work.

Charter is considered harder to justify for a single executive making an occasional trip on a route with frequent, direct, well-timed commercial flights, for short domestic hops where fast rail is a realistic alternative, or where business class already offers adequate conditions. Businesses that fly frequently enough to see a pattern are generally better served by a standing charter arrangement or a jet card than by individual on-demand bookings.
