Boston Logan Receives First Barge of Sustainable Aviation Fuel, Becoming First Northeast Airport to Adopt SAF
Why It MattersSAF arriving by barge at a major Northeast gateway shows the fuel moving beyond West Coast hubs into routine airport supply chains, widening where operators can draw lower-carbon fuel.
Boston Logan International Airport introduced sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) with the arrival of its first SAF barge, announced on Oct. 29 by Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) CEO Richard Devy alongside Delta Air Lines and local elected officials.

Devy described SAF as a drop-in fuel that can be mixed with conventional jet fuel and said it is about 30 percent cleaner than the jet fuel currently used. According to Massport, SAF delivers the same performance and safety as conventional jet fuel with a smaller carbon footprint. The fuel supports Massport's goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.
