University of Waterloo and Airbus Form Research Partnership to Advance Sustainable Aerospace Technologies

The University of Waterloo and Airbus have formalized a research partnership designed to advance sustainable aerospace technologies, connecting university researchers and students with real-world industry challenges. The partnership will be coordinated through the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Aeronautics (WISA) and linked to the Future in Motion Network, building on a collaboration launched in 2021 between WISA and Skywise, Airbus' Waterloo-based digital aviation company formed through the merger of Navblue and Skywise digital solutions, which itself traces its roots to Navtech, a startup originating at the University of Waterloo.
Suzanne Kearns, associate professor and WISA executive director, said Waterloo researchers are already investigating questions that will transform aerospace, while Airbus brings deep industry expertise and Waterloo offers a research network connecting aviation and aerospace to emerging technologies and complex global challenges. Students are also expected to benefit through participation in real-world industry projects. Erin Appleby, Canada managing director at Skywise, said achieving operational excellence and sustainability in the industry requires the bright minds, advanced digital expertise, and collaborative spirit Waterloo is known for, and that the partnership bridges academic research and real-world impact.
