Synapse Aviation's Airport Briefing Launches Adaptive TEM for Context-Aware Flight Threat Briefings

Why It MattersDeterministic, traceable risk scoring built into pre-flight briefings points to how operators may standardise threat management and document crew briefing engagement without relying on generative AI.

AeroTime

Synapse Aviation's digital briefing platform Airport Briefing has launched Adaptive TEM, a data-driven evolution of traditional Threat and Error Management (TEM) that produces a context-aware threat briefing for each flight. The system continuously evaluates operational, environmental and procedural conditions to help crews identify threats, prioritize mitigations and adapt as conditions change.

Adaptive TEM draws on more than 300 million operational data points across airports worldwide, including FMS-grade aeronautical data from Lido's SkyData infrastructure, and is kept current with AIRAC cycle updates. It analyzes weather, runway configuration, NOTAMs, terrain, airspace, approach characteristics and operational limitations, then sorts threats into six categories: Environment, Airport, ATC & Airspace, Operational, Aircraft and Human Factors. Each threat is scored and ranked as a high, medium or low risk factor, with suggested mitigations.

According to Airport Briefing, threat outputs come from structured operational logic, deterministic evaluation formulas and contextual operational rules, not from probabilistic or generative AI reasoning, and every output can be traced back to its inputs and evaluation logic. AI is used only in back-office tasks such as content handling, NOTAM interpretation assistance and data management. Adaptive TEM is positioned as a decision-support tool that extends the TEM framework and does not replace pilot judgment, standard operating procedures or company decision-making.

The tool is designed for flight operations, safety management, training and standards departments, and flight crews, including support for reassessment during diversions and delays. Alongside the launch, Airport Briefing introduced an AI chat assistant to help users and prospective customers find information about the platform, and its Resource Center brings together training videos, user manuals and frequently asked questions. Adaptive TEM is available to airlines and aviation operators, which can request a demo through the Airport Briefing website; applications from individual pilots are not accepted at this stage.
