Madrid–Barajas GAT: Spain's Sole Private Aviation Gateway Prepares for Formula 1 Decade with New 5,000 sq m Hangar

Why It MattersA decade-long Formula 1 contract and new hangar capacity signal growing institutional investment in Spain's sole business aviation gateway as event-driven VIP traffic expands.

Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport's General Aviation Terminal (GAT) is Spain's only business aviation gateway, following Torrejón Airport's closure to general aviation in 2013. Situated in the airport's southern area within the former State Pavilion and General Aviation Terminal buildings, separate from the four commercial passenger terminals, the GAT operates 24 hours a day and sits roughly 8 to 12 kilometres from Madrid's financial district.

The GAT's four operational runways mean scheduled commercial peak hours have little effect on private aviation movements, and slots—mandatory for all general aviation arrivals and departures—are typically confirmed within an hour by ground handlers. Several FBOs operate on site, including Universal Aviation Spain, Sky Valet Madrid, AviaVIP and Gestair, offering VIP lounges, ground handling and, in AviaVIP's case, on-site customs and immigration following a five-year Aena licence renewal.

Universal Aviation Spain is currently constructing a 5,000-square-metre exclusive general aviation hangar on Ramp 7, the first and only such facility inside Madrid–Barajas, scheduled to open in the second half of 2026. The timing coincides with the start of Formula 1 racing in Madrid under a decade-long contract running from 2026 to 2035, expected to bring a significant rise in corporate hospitality and VIP traffic. The GAT also sees concentrated demand around Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid fixtures and the IFEMA congress and trade fair calendar, with transfer times ranging from about 10 minutes to IFEMA up to roughly 26 to 42 minutes to the Royal Palace diplomatic quarter.
