Signature Aviation Opens New 433-Square-Metre Private Aviation Terminal at Glasgow Airport

Why It MattersRebuilding rather than refurbishing a terminal held since the early 1990s shows how FBO operators respond when customer volumes and expectations outgrow ageing ground facilities, even at regional airports.

What happened

Signature Aviation has introduced a new private aviation terminal at Glasgow Airport, replacing its previous building on the same site. The company has had a presence at the airport since the early 1990s, serving private aircraft operators, business travellers and flight crews. Because of increasing customer numbers and changing expectations, the existing terminal was no longer suitable, and Signature Aviation chose to demolish it and build a new facility rather than refurbish it.

The terminal provides approximately 433 square metres of accommodation. It was designed and delivered by Scottish workplace design and fit-out specialist Amos Beech, which acted as both principal designer and principal contractor and worked with Signature Aviation from the earliest planning stages. Early cost assessments led to adjustments to the proposed building footprint so the space could be optimised within the available budget.

Visitors enter through a double-height entrance with contemporary pendant lighting and bespoke concierge desks. The building includes a business lounge, a dedicated VIP suite, private areas for relaxing or working before departure, a private conference room, a dedicated screening room and professional pilot amenities. The interior design also references Glasgow's cultural heritage.

Construction took place at an operational airport. Amos Beech carried out site investigations and managed the work packages alongside specialist contractors: Bottom Groundworks was appointed for the groundworks, and Modulek was responsible for the building envelope.

Industry impact & what to watch

A full demolish-and-rebuild, as opposed to a refit, is a significant commitment for a ground-handling and FBO operator, and it signals that the business case at Glasgow rests on sustained demand from private operators, passengers and crews. In the FBO segment, the terminal is the product: lounge quality, private meeting space and crew amenities are part of what an operator offers alongside fuel and handling.

The project also illustrates how fit-out specialists are being used as single-point delivery partners. Having one firm act as principal designer and principal contractor, with cost checks feeding back into the footprint at an early stage, is a way of keeping a build within budget while the airport keeps operating around it.

The Glasgow facility now serves as a benchmark for how the operator presents itself at a Scottish gateway. The milestone that will show how the larger footprint and the VIP, conference and screening areas are being used is the terminal's first full operating period, which the announcement does not date.
