General Dynamics Elects Danny Deep as CEO, Novakovic to Become Executive Chairman Effective January 1, 2027
Why It MattersThe transition shows how large defense primes manage leadership succession through decades-long internal promotion rather than external hires, preserving continuity across business aviation, shipbuilding and land systems portfolios.
What happened
General Dynamics announced on October 7, 2026 that its board of directors has elected Danny Deep as chief executive officer, effective January 1, 2027. Deep currently serves as president of the company and will succeed Phebe Novakovic, who has served as CEO since 2013 and will transition to the role of executive chairman.

Novakovic described Deep as "a highly skilled executive with rich operating experience" and expressed confidence in his leadership. Independent lead director Laura J. Schumacher thanked Novakovic for her "outstanding leadership and lasting contributions" and said the board has "every confidence" that Deep will continue her legacy.
Deep has been with General Dynamics for 25 years, holding positions of increasing responsibility before becoming president in 2025. He previously served as executive vice president of Global Operations, executive vice president of Combat Systems, and president of Land Systems. General Dynamics is headquartered in Reston, Virginia, and operates across business aviation, ship construction and repair, land combat vehicles, weapon systems and munitions, and technology products and services. The company employs more than 120,000 people worldwide and generated $52.6 billion in revenue in 2025.
Industry impact & what to watch
Leadership transitions at major defense and aerospace primes typically favor long-tenured internal executives over outside hires, since programs spanning submarines, combat vehicles and business jets require institutional knowledge that takes years to build. Deep's 25 years at the company, including stints running Combat Systems and Land Systems before his 2025 promotion to president, fits that pattern of grooming a successor across multiple operating segments rather than a single division.
Novakovic's move to executive chairman rather than full retirement suggests the board wants continuity during the handover, with her remaining available through the transition period leading up to January 1, 2027. What remains to be seen is how Deep positions the company's diversified portfolio, spanning Gulfstream business jets, Electric Boat submarines and land systems, once he assumes full operating authority.
