Greenland's Ilulissat Airport Opens as Third New Airport; Monterrey, Swedavia, Hawaiian and Manassas Announce Projects
Why It MattersCapital is flowing into regional access and passenger-experience infrastructure, with airports using discounts, new terminals and certification to attract or retain carrier service outside the largest hubs.
Ilulissat Airport (JAV), the third of three new airports in Greenland, opened on Oct. 29. Ilulissat is Greenland's third-largest city. Air Greenland operated the inaugural flight with an Airbus A330 bound for Copenhagen Airport (CPH) and will initially be the airport's only carrier, operating 1,878 total two-way seats for the week commencing Nov. 1, according to OAG Schedules Analyser data. That includes 518 two-way seats between JAV and Nuuk Airport (GOH) and 378 between JAV and CPH. Greenland Airports, which manages JAV, said the airport will ramp up gradually.

Elsewhere, Monterrey International Airport (MTY) operator Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte (OMA) said it will spend 8 billion Mexican pesos ($427 million) over the next five years to expand the airport. Terminal A will grow from 40,000 m2, and modernization projects include a new domestic baggage claim area with five carousels able to handle 2,500 to 3,000 pieces of luggage per hour from up to 10 simultaneous flights.
Swedish airports operator Swedavia said that from 2027, airlines offering frequent services between Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN) and smaller airports will receive substantial discounts on landing and passenger charges. The discounts apply to domestic routes such as Gothenburg, Malmo and Lulea, and international routes such as Gdansk, Poland and Bergen, Norway. Total discounts over the next five years are expected to be nearly 1 billion Swedish kronor ($103 million).
Hawaiian Airlines has started construction of a premium lounge at Honolulu's Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), scheduled to open in the first half of 2028. It will hold around 200 passengers and sit at the entrance of HNL's Mauka Concourse.
Washington Manassas Airport (HEF) in Virginia, around 20 mi. from Washington Dulles International Airport, broke ground on a new 145-ft. air traffic control tower. The airport gained FAA Part 139 certification in August, allowing it to handle commercial flights, and aims to have scheduled airline service by the end of 2027.
