Taoyuan Airport to Begin Annual North Runway Maintenance Tuesday, South Runway Stays Open

Why It MattersScheduling runway resurfacing into overnight closures on odd-numbered November weekdays shows how a single-runway-at-a-time approach lets a high-volume hub renew pavement ahead of peak holiday travel without cutting daytime capacity.

Taoyuan International Airport Corp. said on Monday that annual maintenance of the airport's north runway will begin on Tuesday. The work covers key sections of the runway and taxiways, including preventive resurfacing, and will be carried out during the airport's routine overnight maintenance closure. The south runway will remain fully operational throughout the project.

Construction is scheduled for odd-numbered days in November, excluding weekends and public holidays. Airport officials will assess weather conditions and flight volumes before each workday and will postpone work if conditions are unfavorable or traffic is heavier than expected.

The operator has set up a task force to coordinate the project and minimize operational disruption. It has held several coordination meetings with the Civil Aviation Administration's Air Navigation and Weather Services, airlines, ground-handling companies and construction contractors to review contingency plans and work arrangements. It also carried out an operational impact assessment using flight volumes during the National Day holiday period as a benchmark. Taoyuan Airport passed 40 million passengers this year on Oct. 13, and the operator said the maintenance will ensure the runway is in optimal condition ahead of the Christmas and New Year holidays and the Lunar New Year travel peak.
