A magnetic navigation (MagNav) system built by Honeywell Aerospace completed a test flight aboard an Embraer 170, flying from Seattle's Puget Sound to southern Alaska and back over the Pacific Ocean without using GPS. Over open ocean, the system improved position accuracy by 89% compared with traditional backup navigation methods.

The test was carried out under the Defense Innovation Unit's MagNav program, originally launched in spring 2024 as "Transition of Quantum Sensing." Of 72 companies that applied through a commercial solutions opening, Honeywell Aerospace was selected to move forward with prototype development. MagNav systems use quantum sensors to read the Earth's natural magnetic field, allowing navigation without GPS satellites; because that magnetic field cannot be jammed or spoofed, the approach offers a resilient alternative in contested environments or over featureless terrain such as open ocean.

Navigation data was streamed to pilots in real time via standard tablets, showing the system can be fielded without a major cockpit instrument overhaul. Kyle Norman, deputy director of DIU's Kill Web portfolio, said the milestone marks a significant win for the department's quantum sensing priorities, noting the program moved from problem sourcing to solicitation to prototype within months. Honeywell Aerospace and DIU are now preparing to demonstrate the technology aboard a U.S. military Boeing C-17 Globemaster III cargo aircraft later this year.
