North Country Aviation Holds Grand Reopening at Gaylord Regional Airport Under New Ownership

Why It MattersThe relaunch shows how small regional charter operators rely on niche access to short runways and local visibility rather than scale to compete for business.

What happened

North Country Aviation, a charter flight company based at Gaylord Regional Airport in northern Michigan, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony and grand reopening on Wednesday following a change in ownership and management. The company has operated since 1982 and offers charter flights covering a service area spanning the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean.

Mark Currier, director of business for North Country Aviation, said the event was intended to raise local awareness of the company's services. "There's many, many people that I have run into in the local area that are just simply unaware that North Country is even here," Currier said. "So, now that it is under new ownership and new management, we wanted to share that knowledge with the local area."

The company operates three charter aircraft, with seating capacities of nine, six, and five passengers respectively. Currier said the company's niche is its ability to land at smaller runways at desired destinations. North Country Aviation also provides aircraft repair and maintenance services in addition to its charter flights.

Industry impact & what to watch

A long-running local charter operator changing hands and re-introducing itself to its own community is a familiar pattern at small regional airports, where name recognition often lags behind actual service availability. Operators like North Country Aviation compete less on fleet size than on reach into destinations larger carriers and larger aircraft cannot serve, using small runway access as the differentiator that justifies a seat on a nine-, six-, or five-passenger aircraft.

Pairing charter flights with in-house aircraft maintenance is a common way smaller operators diversify revenue beyond flight hours alone, giving them a second line of business tied to the same airport footprint. Whether the new ownership expands the three-aircraft fleet or broadens the Caribbean, Canada, and U.S. routes already served will depend on how much local demand the awareness push under Currier actually generates.
