McDermott Aviation adds factory-new Airbus H125 to fleet, based on Sunshine Coast

McDermott Aviation, described as Australia's largest privately owned helicopter operator, has taken delivery of a factory-new Airbus H125 single-engine helicopter that will be based on the Sunshine Coast. The aircraft is powered by a Safran Arriel 2D engine.

The company said the acquisition was driven by the H125's operational capability, versatility and compatibility with its existing fleet, noting that the type shares maintenance commonality with its AS355F1 helicopters in terms of knowledge, tooling and parts support.

Founder and President John McDermott said the addition reflects a decades-long investment strategy. "Over the past four decades, we have built one of the world's most capable specialist helicopter fleets through strategic investment, engineering expertise and an unwavering focus on operational excellence," he said. "The H125 has an outstanding reputation for reliability, performance and adaptability, making it an excellent fit for our business." McDermott Aviation said the acquisition forms part of a broader strategy to expand and modernise its fleet across aviation operations in Australia and internationally.

A specialist operator adding a single-engine type it already knows how to support is a common route for fleet growth: the new aircraft slots in beside an existing type, the AS355F1, without forcing new tooling, parts inventories or engineering training. That commonality is often as decisive as the aircraft's own performance in a purchase decision, since it shapes how quickly a new airframe can start earning revenue.

For specialist helicopter operations, fleet planning tends to weigh type compatibility alongside capability, because shared knowledge and parts support lower the marginal cost of each additional aircraft. Whether this H125 is the first of further additions, and how the stated plan to expand internationally takes shape, are questions McDermott Aviation has not yet detailed publicly.
