Private Jet Demand at Ahmedabad's SVPI Airport Doubles Since Covid, Reaching 150–200 Monthly Movements

Private aircraft demand at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPI) in Ahmedabad has doubled over the five years since the Covid-19 pandemic, with the airport now recording an estimated 150-200 private aircraft and jet movements per month. Movements have declined slightly over the past three months, attributed to rising Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices linked to the West Asian conflict.

Charter rates for private aircraft carrying six to 12 passengers range from ₹1.5 lakh to ₹8 lakh per hour depending on aircraft type. A two- to four-hour flight to religious destinations such as Somnath or Dwarka can cost between ₹5 lakh and ₹25 lakh. Ground-handling charges for landing at SVPI range from ₹50,000 to ₹3 lakh depending on aircraft weight, with parking charges levied separately on an hourly basis. Parking fees at the airport have more than doubled over the past five years. SVPI has approximately 12 parking stands for private aircraft, and around 20 aircraft are owned by five to six operators.

Users of private charter services include spiritual leaders, politicians, industrialists, film stars and cricketers, as well as affluent and upper-middle-class families travelling for religious pilgrimages. Demand rises sharply during major religious events such as the Kumbh Mela, when bookings operate on a waiting-list basis.

Helicopter demand increases after the monsoon season, and Ahmedabad is expected to record more than 100 helicopter movements per month after Diwali. Helicopters are chartered for religious journeys to destinations including Ambaji, aerial flower showers at events, land surveys, electricity pole maintenance and pipeline mapping. Hourly helicopter rental costs range from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh. Private aircraft are also booked during IPL matches, concerts, political rallies and elections. Around 60-70 pilots are currently associated with private aviation companies in Ahmedabad, with each flight typically requiring two to three pilots.

This case illustrates how private aviation demand in parts of India tracks the religious and cultural calendar as much as it tracks business or leisure travel. A pilgrimage circuit running through Somnath, Dwarka and Ambaji, alongside event-driven flying for IPL matches, concerts and political rallies, gives SVPI's charter market a demand pattern built around dated occasions rather than steady point-to-point traffic.

That pattern shapes how the local market actually functions: a fixed stock of roughly 12 parking stands and around 20 aircraft held by five to six operators has to absorb sharp peaks around events like the Kumbh Mela, where bookings run on a waiting list, while also flexing for a post-monsoon and post-Diwali jump in helicopter movements. Pricing on both charter hours and ground handling is tiered to aircraft size, and parking fees have more than doubled over five years, meaning fixed-cost pressure on operators has risen even as flight volumes have only recently softened.

The near-term movements to watch are fuel-driven and seasonal rather than structural: whether ATF prices tied to the West Asian conflict continue to weigh on monthly movement counts, and whether helicopter demand after Diwali clears the 100-movement mark as expected. Either would confirm that current softness is a cost and calendar effect rather than a shift in underlying demand for private and religious-travel charter in the region.
