Germany's Aero-Dienst takes delivery of first Challenger 650 to replace ageing Learjet 60XRs

Why It MattersCharter and air-ambulance operators renewing ageing midsize fleets increasingly favor larger, longer-range super-midsize jets, reshaping the segment's typical cabin and range profile over time.

What happened

Aero-Dienst (ADN), based in Nuremberg, Germany, has taken delivery of the first of two ordered Bombardier Challenger 650 aircraft. The jet, registered D-ADAC (msn 6238), was ferried from Bombardier Business Aircraft's Montréal Trudeau production facilities to Nuremberg on September 11.

The aircraft was originally ordered in mid-2024 and had initially been planned for delivery in August 2026; it is now scheduled to enter service in October. A second Challenger 650, ordered in mid-2026, is scheduled for delivery in May 2027 and is likewise planned to enter service in October of that year.

Industry impact & what to watch

Fleet renewal of this kind typically tracks age and mission-fit pressure on legacy midsize jets, with operators trading up to newer, larger-cabin types as replacement cycles come due. Aero-Dienst's move to bring in two Challenger 650s to succeed its Learjet 60XRs fits that broader replacement pattern seen across charter and specialised operators.

How such transitions play out commercially depends on how quickly the new type is integrated into scheduling, crew training and client contracts, since a staggered delivery — one aircraft now, the second over a year later — lets an operator phase in capability without grounding its existing fleet all at once.

The next marker will be whether the first Challenger 650 enters service on the planned October timeline, and how the second aircraft's May 2027 delivery and subsequent October 2027 entry into service track against that schedule.
