Aspen Chamber Reports Two-Thirds of Visitors Unaffected by 2027 Airport Closure Plans

The Aspen Chamber Resort Association (ACRA) briefed Aspen City Council at a work session on visitor sentiment and logistical planning tied to the scheduled 2027 closure of Aspen/Pitkin County Airport. ACRA's 2025 visitor research found that two-thirds of visitors said the closure would not affect their intent to visit, while 6% said they were more likely to visit during the closure, expecting a less crowded experience; a separate hotel-guest survey produced consistent results.
ACRA Executive Director Eliza Voss said tourism partners, including Aspen One and Snowmass Tourism, have agreed to update websites with ground transportation information and launch summer visitation campaigns targeting national and international visitors. She confirmed all events are proceeding as scheduled in summer 2027 except the Aspen Security Forum at The Aspen Institute.
Fly Aspen Snowmass Consultant Bill Tomcich told council that Denver International Airport is the second busiest gateway for Roaring Fork Valley visitors, with about 193,233 enplanements, behind Aspen's 317,755. Historical trends show 50% of summertime visitors use the Aspen airport and 45% use Denver, with no scheduled ground transportation between the two, so most passengers rely on private automobiles. In response, Eagle County Regional Airport's peak summer 2027 flight schedule is set to rise from 46 weekly flights to 112 weekly flights, and Tomcich said an announcement on proposed shuttle service from Eagle is expected within weeks.
Council Member Bill Guth raised concerns that current planning is insufficient to protect local businesses, while Council Member Sam Rose asked ACRA to return with specific recommendations following upcoming listening sessions, and Council Member Benedetti expressed support for a possible business relief fund if the summer performs poorly. ACRA is scheduled to return to council on October 26 to discuss its 2027 budget, covering transportation alternatives, leisure booking incentives, and increased visitation campaign spending.
