Volocopter flying taxi test flights cancelled in Paris during Olympics over certification delay

Test flights of the Volocopter VoloCity flying taxi planned for the Paris Olympics were cancelled after European certification for the aircraft's engine failed to arrive in time, promoters announced Thursday. German manufacturer Volocopter had conducted test flights in the Paris region for several years and had lobbied European authorities for authorisation ahead of the Games, working with French airport operator ADP, Paris metro and bus operator RATP, and the Paris regional government.

ADP deputy CEO Edward Arkwright said certification for the VoloCity engine had been delayed by a few weeks due to issues with its motors, adding, "We are a little disappointed, but in any case we had said that we would not make any compromises with security." Volocopter CEO Dirk Hoke attributed the delay to "an American supplier who was not capable of providing what he had promised," and said the motors would be returned to France the following week, but not in time for test flights in Paris before the Olympics close.

The original plan called for test flights to land on a float on the Seine river near the Austerlitz railway station in southeastern Paris, intended to demonstrate the technology's use of "vertiport" take-off and landing sites during the Games. Passenger-free test flights will instead be held at the aerodrome in Saint Cyr l'Ecole, a suburban town west of Paris near the Chateau de Versailles, on Thursday and Sunday.

The episode shows how advanced air mobility timelines hinge on supplier and certification chains that operate on their own schedule, independent of the marketing calendar a project is built around. A years-long testing partnership involving an airport operator, a transit authority and regional government could not compress a motor certification delay of only a few weeks, underlining how little flexibility exists once a safety regulator's process is running.

This market segment depends on aligning aircraft certification, ground infrastructure like vertiports, and public demonstration events, and any one of those slipping forces the others to adapt rather than proceed on the original stage. Moving the flights from a symbolic Seine-side site to a suburban aerodrome preserves the test programme while losing the intended public visibility.

What comes next is whether the motors return from the American supplier as promised and clear certification, and whether Volocopter and ADP attempt a public demonstration on the Seine site after the Games rather than during them.
